FORT ATKINSON PUBLIC LIBRARY RECEIVES NATIONAL GRANT FOR SMALL AND RURAL LIBRARIES
$20,000 Grant Will Help the Library Work with Residents with Disabilities to fully access the library.
Fort Atkinson — Fort Atkinson Public Library has been selected as one of 240 libraries to participate in Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities, an American Library Association (ALA) initiative that provides community engagement and accessibility resources to small and rural libraries to help them better serve people with disabilities.
The competitive award comes with a $20,000 grant that will help the library with capital improvements around its disabled access.
“We are so proud to be chosen for this amazing opportunity,” said Library Director Laura Thomas. “This grant will allow our library to get to know our residents with disabilities better. It will help us improve our services to ensure this population feels welcome and comfortable in our space.”
As part of the grant, Fort Atkinson Public Library staff will take an online course in how to lead conversations, a skill vital to library work today. Staff will then host a conversation with residents about accessibility and use the grant funds to replace the rear entrance, install electric door openers [and replace the existing ramp].
Accessibility is vital to the use of library services, and with limited access means limited use. “It’s often difficult to use the rear entrance to the library and we want to improve that so that all of our patrons are able to access the library and its resources,” said Thomas.
If you are interested in getting involved or taking part in the conversation, please contact Laura Thomas at 563-534-222, webmaster@fortatkinson.lib.ia.us or visit www.fortatkinson.lib.ia.us for more information.
Since 2014, ALA’s Libraries Transforming Communities initiative has re-imagined the role libraries play in supporting communities. Libraries of all types have utilized free dialogue and deliberation training and resources to lead community and campus forums; take part in anti-violence activities; provide a space for residents to come together and discuss challenging topics; and have productive conversations with civic leaders, library trustees and staff.
“Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities is an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA) in collaboration with the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL).”
Fort Atkinson Public Library is a rural library located in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. It was established in 1964 to serve Fort Atkinson and the surrounding area. It provides a variety of services to patrons of all ages and abilities. For more information, see our website at www.fortatkinson.lib.ia.us.

Local Band Members Reunite After 45 Years to Benefit the VMH Health Care Foundation
Original members of four local bands will be reuniting on Friday evening of Mother’s Day Weekend, May 12, for one night in downtown Waukon. This benefit event features a reunion of 11 mostly local musicians, two of whom played together 45 years ago in a number of area bands including Rising Sun, Horizon, Jackson Junction and Deep River.
Many of the returning musicians are from Waukon including brothers Bill Withers, Jim Withers, John Withers, along with Gary Hesla, Bob Bechtel, Dave Dougherty, Brad Prestemon, Todd Pickett and Joel Anderson. They will be joined by Keel Clemmens and Jamey Lideen, longtime band members over the years. Of the original 12 musicians, the late Pat Dougherty, will also be remembered during the event, with his brother Dave joining the band at times throughout the evening.
This reunited band is now known as “Bandmates, Brothers and Friends” or “BBF”. The event will take place at Goodfella’s in downtown Waukon from 6-10 p.m. on Friday, May 12. Everyone attending will enjoy songs from the 50’s through the 90’s, both country and rock, from classic bands and individual artists like Elvis, the Beatles and Alabama, to name a few.
“These three bands have played hundreds of venues over four decades, across the tri-state area; however, our base was always northeast Iowa. This will be the first time we have all been together at one event,” states Bill Withers, event coordinator. “We wanted to return to our roots, donating our time and event proceeds. We chose the Veterans Memorial Hospital Health Care Foundation as our beneficiary as part of their recent conversion to county ownership. We hope everyone will save the date and look forward to an amazing night of memories and great music.”
Free-will donations will be accepted at the door and on-line. All proceeds will benefit the Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation.

Decorah Lutheran and Rotary host Blood Drive
The second annual Decorah Lutheran Church Blood Drive sponsored by Decorah Rotary Club will take place on Monday, March 13, from 12:00 PM – 5:30 PM at Decorah Lutheran Church. Walk-in donors will be accepted, but prospective doors are encouraged to pre-register at www.redcrossblood.org to save time on drive day.
This is the second collaborative blood drive between the two organizations. Last year’s took place in May, but Red Cross representatives asked organizers to consider moving up the drive to accommodate a shortage of drive hosts. Every two seconds someone in the US needs blood or platelets and donating in early spring can help prevent a blood shortage later.
“Our goal is to make our blood drive fun, friendly, and very welcoming to both first time and repeat donors,” said blood program leader Brecka Putnam, a member of both Rotary and Decorah Lutheran. We have kind volunteers, homemade and store-bought post donation treats, and Culver’s in Decorah is making giving blood sweeter than ever through their in-kind support.”
This event is a Give a Pint, Get a Pint Drive, which means that Culver’s will provide a coupon for a free pint of frozen custard to every donor. Additionally, all donors will receive a $10 Visa Prepaid Card via email.

Landing Market to Serve Ukrainian Meal, Raise Funds
The Landing Market, Decorah, will host a traditional Ukrainian meal on Wed., March 1, to raise funds to benefit the people of Ukraine. The event, the second in The Landing’s Passport Dinner series which launched in Jan., will run from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. This event commemorates a year of resistance by Ukrainian people, following full-scale invasion which began February 24, 2022.
Ukraine native Maryna Bazylevych Nading and her husband Scott Nading will prepare Borscht, a type of vegetable stew which is vegan, and “Herring under a Fur Coat” salad (Oseledets pid Shuboiu), a salad made with herring and vegetables.
Event proceeds will benefit two highly regarded volunteer relief efforts in Khmelnytskyi, Maryna Nading’s hometown. The first, Zahyst, has been working on war relief in Ukraine since 2014. The group delivers aid to civilians and soldiers on the frontlines, connecting people who want to help directly with those who need help. The second is a collaboration with a tireless volunteer Viacheslav Ivakh, a brother of the late war hero Dmytro Ivakh for whom a school in Khmelnytskyi is named. Viacheslav Ivakh has been delivering humanitarian aid and generators to Ukrainian orphanages and health care facilities in the vicinity of the war zone.
“The war against Ukraine started about a year ago, causing unimaginable suffering for the Ukrainian people,” says Pete Espinosa, owner of The Landing. “We’re gratified by the opportunity to help them and to enjoy a delicious meal at the same time.”
Maryna Nading states, “It means a world to me that Decorah is joining cities around the world who are showing solidarity with Ukrainian people on this grim one-year anniversary of the barbaric attack against peaceful people of a sovereign nation. My closest family and friends chose to stay in Ukraine working in their spheres of influence towards the end of this war, and they care deeply about feeling supported by the world community. Decorah friends and family have fundraised and celebrated Ukrainian culture during this difficult year, and I hope they enjoy this traditional meal.”
Cost is $20 per person. Freewill donations will also be accepted. Reservations are not required.
The Landing’s “Passport Dinners” series brings the cuisine of other countries and cultures to the Decorah area and provides an opportunity to get to know about other places and meet new people.
The Landing Market is located at 211 College Dr., Decorah. It houses food and beverage-oriented establishment, which include Justin’s, The Buzz, Spectrum Made with Love, Root 43, and Artisan Ghost Kitchen, as well as space for events. For more information, email info@thelandingmarket.com or call (563) 277-1893.

The train will again raise money, food and awareness for local food banks in communities along the CP network.
“I’m grateful to the CP team members who adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic to deliver two exceptional virtual Holiday Train shows and to all those who continued to donate while we kept community members safe,” said Keith Creel, CP’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “The Holiday Train is all about families and communities coming together to celebrate the season and help those in need. We are excited to be back out on the rails and in our communities, taking these two beautiful trains across our network and sharing the joy that comes with gathering in the spirit of giving.”
The 2022 tour will launch on Nov. 23 with the Holiday Train’s first-ever Maine shows in Jackman, Brownville Junction and Hermon. Also for the first time, the Holiday Train will host shows on Nov. 24 in Lac-Megantic, Sherbrooke and Farnham, Que.; the first Canadian stops of 2022. The tour will feature 168 live shows, including Toronto on Nov. 29; Bensenville, Ill., on Dec. 2; Davenport, Iowa, on Dec. 3; Kansas City, Mo., on Dec. 4; Calgary on Dec. 11; and a final show in Port Coquitlam, B.C., on Dec. 18. A full schedule is available at cpr.ca/holidaytrain.
Live music is essential to the CP Holiday Train experience. This year’s performers will include Alan Doyle, Tenille Townes, Mackenzie Porter and Lindsay Ell, to name a few. Details about this year’s artists and which performers will play which shows are available at cpr.ca/holidaytrain.
Holiday Train shows are free to attend. CP asks attendees to bring a cash or non-perishable food donation if they’re able. Local food shelves will set up collection stations at each event, with all donations made staying with the local food bank to help people in need in the community. Because local food shelves buy food at a discount, cash donations can go further than food donations to help those in need.
“Food banks and communities across Canada are so excited to see the CP Holiday Train return, as it brings together the City of Calgary to kick off the holidays and give back at the same time,” said Calgary Food Bank President and CEO James McAra. “The Calgary Food Bank is so grateful for CP’s continued support to help us build a Canada where no one goes hungry.”
Since the Holiday Train program launched in 1999, it’s raised more than $21 million and collected 5 million pounds of food for community food banks across North America.
“This year, more than ever, the support, awareness and goodwill that the CP Holiday Train brings will make an impact beyond imagination to the food support programs of East Side Neighborhood Services,” said Mary Anstett, Vice President, Community Engagement for East Side Neighborhood Services in Minneapolis. “With the support that Holiday Train brings in, we can rest assured that so many will have warm nutritious food on their tables in the coldest months.”
